About the Crew

Come in and say Hello to..

The crew at the Avery Humane Society would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to our friend and mentor Alice Sudderth. After over twenty years Alice has retired to be at home with her grandson Jayden and her grandbaby on the way. We already miss you!

New Acting Executive Director!

This is me, Charlene Calhoun. I have worked here for over four years now. If you asked me to pick what is my favorite section to work in I wouldn't be able to answer. I had planned on finishing school and becoming a counselor for children in school or a hospital situation. I was asked by my sister (who worked here at the time) if I would be interested in doing the website for the shelter. I started just updating what was already here but adding my own little touches. Before I knew it I was working on it full time and had found a couple other websites that allow shelters to post their animals for free. It wasn't long until I felt that I would love to work closer with the animals. I have worked in each area with all ages of cats and dogs. I feel this is exactly where I am supposed to be. This February I started helping Alice with the "New Leash on Life" program. I will be helping to train inmates on training the dogs and then placing them in forever homes.

August, 2008

This was my first month as director and I have to ask myself "did I know what I was getting into?". Alice made it all seem so easy. I have so much support from our board members and family and I wont let them down. I do promise to make it my mission to continue in the work that Alice began. I will do my part to help our county and shelter grow in animal education and humane treatment of all animals equally. I hope to serve you well. Charlene Calhoun

New Shelter Manager

Alex Cornwell has come back to help with the animals. He has just taken over my job as Crew Leader and is great with helping people with any questions they have. Alex is very patient with the employees and with the animals. He is such a wonderful asset to our shelter.

Feline Caregiver

This is Sabrina McClellan. We hired Sabrina to work with the cats and kittens. She takes her job very seriously. You can ask her anything about any of them and she knows the answer. Sabrina makes it in to work even when she is feeling bad because she knows the animals depend on her.

Puppy Caregiver

This is Brittany Umphlett. Brittany has been trained to work with all areas of the shelter. She is very gentle and soft spoken and that is just what these babies like! Brittany has also proven that she can be just as strong as the big dogs and doesn't mind cleaning up their messes!

Puppy Caregiver ~ Area Supervisor

Ruth Crom has the biggest soft spot for our little puppies. We are so lucky to have her with us. Ruth is one person you will never have to worry about giving enough love and compassion to the animals.

New
Canine Caregiver!

This is Jose!  He has brought a smile to work with him every day since he came to work here. He is very soft spoken to our dogs. Jose has a great way of keeping a calmness within his area. All the dogs love to see him come in.
