Home Sweet Home

It is our purpose to find the best homes for each and every animal that comes through our shelter. Every now and then we receive a letter or email with photos updating their progress. We have decided to devote a page on our website to those great homes. This way all of our friends can enjoy, not their happy endings, but wonderful beginnings.

Hi,

I thought I would let you know that my new home has worked out great.

My big brother did not pay too much attention to me the first week, but now we are the best of friends.

Mom and Dad are keeping me up to date on my shots, I go again next week for rabies and some other adult shot.

My spaying went very well, no problems at all.  When Mom picked me up I weighed 11 lbs.  Now, I weigh almost 40lbs.

Looks like I am going to be a big girl.  I am doing pretty good with housebreaking.  Every now and then I get excited and pee in the floor.

Mom keeps the shampooer ready just in case.  I love to chew, thank goodness I have a lot of toys!  I sleep in my crate at night or if Mom and

Day have to be away for a short time.  We have a giant yard and a big deck to hang out on and enjoy the sun when it shines.

I hope all of you are well and thanks for taking care of me when I was a baby puppy.

To the Folks at Avery County Humane Society:

We just wanted you to know that Ballou and Heidi
(who we renamed "Buffy") are doing great since we brought them
home from ACHS in February. A recent picture of the kitties is attached. Thank you again for the great work you do. --Chris and Cathy Robbins

Laraine and I wanted to send you a few pictures and update you on "Sofia" who is now known as "Jordan".  She has been a welcomed addition to our home, although she is the smallest around, she still commands the attention of all the 'boys'.  Her best buddy is Boomer, our Saint Bernard.  Although Baxter and Dexter make good play buddies too.

Jordan is an absolute joy to have in our family, thanks for allowing her to find us. Anyway, thought you would enjoy hearing from one that has been adopted out for a while and doing well.

Hi Charlene and staff,

Here are some pictures of Lexie (Kiwi).  She is growing like a weed.  We are having a great time.  She is about 16 in tall now. I've had to adjust her collar 2 times.  She has been on a trip to Florida when I visited my daughter and she did great on the trip. Thank everyone there.  She is a real joy!

Karen

We added Daks (Australian word for underpants) to our family last August (I can't remember his original name now) and just wanted to give you an update as well as a recent picture.  He is a sweet sweet boy!  He grew up so fast physically but is still a puppy most days.  He keeps our 14 yo ACD active and on her toes and he is best friends with our 2 1/2 yo daughter Lia.

This is Rose Lavender. Her original name was Rose. We got these photos in an update. They say that Rose and Alonnah 8 years old, are inseparable. I think Rose Lavender has herself a nice home!

You might remember Petunia. This is her new family. It looks like "Lady Petunia" is thriving in her new home. . . and maybe a little spoiled!

This is the update for Ziggy. The whole family thinks he is perfect.

Hello, Alice and Charlene!

Well, what do you think of this, our precious "Miss Lucille", going for a ride in our '38 Packard!  Is she spoiled or what?  We have thoroughly enjoyed taking her on our weekly "escapades" around town.  You can tell she truly loves going!

Now that the weather has warmed up, Lucy frequently goes out on our pier to "check things out"!  She is always "on the go" and the first to "alert" us of any activities that may be going on outside.  She is truly a treasure - we love her dearly!

Thank you for taking such good care of all the precious dogs and cats that you "take under your wing"!  Bob and I will always be grateful!

Sincerely,

Ginger and Bob Wells

Thanks for the picture Charlene, the puppies are doing great.  Tiki is absolutely on point with her training, she's a darling sweetheart and she and Whiskey are great playmates.  Thank you so much!  I'll bring them by for a visit when they're a bit bigger. Thanks again! Tessa Wittman

Thank you for the photo.  Patty and Raven, my black lab, are doing great!  Patty has adjusted well to her new home and really enjoys the large yard where the dogs can run and play.

Thanks so very much for all you do to help all of the wonderful animals!!

Hello Alice, and friends,

Just wanted to let you know that Little River is home now. We got back here at 6:30 AM, Tuesday morning.

He is a very happy little man, and so are we. He is so loving, smart, and so much a part of the family now. For me,

after losing my Taz, I have been so lost for 2 years. I walked in the house 2 weeks ago to see my daughter on line. She was talking to my other daughter that is in Hudson NC. The picture that they were both looking at was "River". I looked at it and started to cry. I wanted to have him with me, it was as if he had been there for me. My kids had it all planned that if there was a way for me to have him I would. Here he is with me, and he had such a hard time getting to me. Surely the Lord had blessed this joining. You are all such wonderful people for taking care of him and waiting for us to come. God Bless all of you for what you do. As soon as I can I will send a donation. River is potty training as if he already knew this. He is so loved.

Tomorrow he will go to the doctor, and we will make sure he is well taken care of, he is a part of us now.

Thank you again, and I will send the pictures as soon as I can get them on the computer.

 Friends in Christ, Barb Vaillancourt

Good Morning Charlene,

Hope all is well…

Just wanted to send you a quick email and let you know how Tater is doing.  He's actually been doing great!

The day we brought him home, he stretched out in the back seat and slept all the way home.  He's finally coming around to both Peter & myself.  He's such a blessing to have and we're really enjoying his company. Hope you have a great day!
Kind Regards,
Jessica Kiers

Hi Charlene and everyone at Avery,

Thank you for the adoption day picture.  Buddy (aka Roger) is doing so great.  It took him about a week before he really felt like he was home.  He sort of had the look of "please keep me" for the first few days.  Now I think he feels as though he's been here forever.  He got a haircut, which he did not enjoy, but he looks great and I am sure he feels so much better.  He is really a beautiful dog and is the sweetest, most loving animal I have ever seen.  He also has a very playful side.  He is working very hard on his housetraining (he had an upset stomach for the first week so it was very hard for him), but he is going really well.  He is also trained on the invisible fence and LOVES to be outside and chase things.  And believe me, he chases after everything especially leaves.   We took him to the vet on the Monday after the adoption for heartworm testing, etc.  He was heartworm free and he started on preventative and on a flea and tick control.  He also had two pretty bad ear infections, but we treated that is now he is going great.  He also now will bark, but still very rarely.   My husband bought a training book and he and my oldest son are working with him.  His first lesson is sit and he is catching on quite well.  He also loves his walks and has come to expect them daily.  Our neighborhood is 1 and a half miles around and he gets a morning walk and an evening walk around.  And just FYI, he still continues to get very dirty.  His favorite hobby is digging.  Attached are some pics of him with his new hairdo.  Thank you again for everything.  We are so fortunate to have found a dog like him and are looking forward to many happy years with him.

The Scorniks,

Hugo, Staci, Simon and Eli

PS:  I sent off for a DNA test on him just to see his mix.  I will let you know when I get the results.

I saw the photo on the website. Why do I always close my eyes when getting a photo taken? Anyway Otis is doing great and gets on very well with the other dogs. Its so hard getting a photo with four dogs in the picture so here is a photo of three including Otis relaxing on the deck

Hello Charlene and Alex,

Just wanted to send over a cute picture of Miss Delilah.  I really have enjoyed the experience of adopting her.  She is a wonderful dog and has settled in very well!

I hope you have placed so many dogs that you can’t remember, but I adopted Delilah in May.  She was a “New Leash on Life “ dog.

Thanks for all you do  and have a great rest of the week!!

Good Afternoon:
Thank you so much for the picture.  Angel is adjusting well to our home in the hills.  She has been to the Vet for a checkup and was pronounced to be fine.  Her surgery is healing nicely as well.  Angel loves the climbing tower in our living room and is thoroughly spoiled enough to snuggle next to us on the sofa.  There are still a few growls and hisses with our other cats, but they are learning to get along and soon will be absolutely fine with each other.  Thank you for making our adoption of Angel such a nice experience.  Thank you and your staff for the wonderful work you do every day with animals looking for forever homes.  It is truly a calling and we are glad you are answering that call.

In Service,
Denny Jennings

Hey everyone. This is my dog-niece named Lucy Lou. She was adopted by my sister and brother-in-law when they both worked here. I guess it was about four and a half years ago. Anyway Lucy has been great with their three daughters. She loves to play with toys but the squeakers never last long. She even comes to my car to see if I have brought her anything! And seeing as how I work here she never fails to give me the once over with her nose. These are a couple of her glamour shots! haha The girls love to paint her nails and fancy her up. I don't know what the family would do without her. Charlene

We wanted to thank you so much for taking such good care of Roxanne until we could adopt her on May 3rd.

She has been a wonderful addition to our family - that is an understatement!  She has a big brother, Sami, and they really love each other.

She has grown a bit more since May, but we think maybe she is done growing now.

She has a wonderful life and we wanted you to know how happy she is and how happy we are:)

Many Many Thanks!

Ted and Debra Campbell

Hi,

I don't know it you received my other email or not.  I sent it to the  adoptpet link.

Anyway, I adopted Fatz on Monday, August 25th.  His name has been changed to Simon.  He is a great dog.

I wish to thank the fantastic staff for all the help and caring attitude.  Avery County Shelter is a very well run organization

with qualified and friendly folks working there.

Barkley, my other dog, is a Therapy dog.  I think that Simon has the smarts and temperament to someday become a Therapy dog, as well.

Barkley will help him learn the ropes.

I'll keep you posted on Simon's progress.

Thanks again for all your help and Simon thanks you, too.

Charlene,

Again, thanks for helping us out yesterday. We'll be watching your web site for the postings.

Congrats on your new Director position. And don't worry. If you are 'where you're supposed to be',

you'll do fine job. And when you have a good crew, that helps a lot. Looks like you have your very

own Dog Whisperer in Jose! (Gotta get him a new hat, though.)

As promised, we are finally sending photos of the three girls. Arabella is "a mess". Keeps us entertained,

though she has stopped drinking from the faucet.

Like the old song says;

"Turn around, they're grown".

Thanks again, The Farlows
