New Leash on Life

One of our area prisons has begun a program called A New Leash on Life. This is something like you might have seen on television called  "Cell Dogs". Each dog will have dual trainers and spend six hours per day of supervised training. We are doing this as an effort to help our dogs find their "forever homes", and to teach the prisoners  to love and nurture. The fee to adopt one of the trained dogs is $150. This includes the spay/neuter, all shots including rabies, worming, flea treatment, heart worm test and preventative treatment, and the basic obedience training. For more information call toll free 866-473-6312 and speak to Charlene or email us at adoptapet@vol.com.

The Dogs Meet Their Trainers..

Cheyenne with Samuel Dwiggins and Larry Hanna.

Cheyenne is a sweet little girl without any aggressions in her. She is very smart and a quick learner. I do not think she had every walked on a leash before, but within no time she was walking with me on one. She does not really like loud noise like the basketball court, but has learned to deal with it and it no longer scares her. She lets anyone pet her, and loves to be petted and held. She comes when called but will not go to a stranger unless myself or partner tell her it is okay. She is very shy, but very friendly when she gets to know you. She would make a very good pet for a family. She is two and a half years old. She has been very healthy with no problems here at the prison. She is a chocolate and white Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix. l We really have grown to love Cheyenne and want desperately to see her go to a good home, with lots of love and someone who loves to brush her as much as her trainer does. Thanks for your time.

Miley with Glen Andrews and Javier Alexander.

ADOPTED!

Hi! My name is Miley, and I'm a beautiful lab-mix. Right now I'm at Mountain View Correctional hanging out with my dog training friends. They're the best! The other dogs at the kennel told me to pick them.

Since I've been here they have taught me to sit, stay, come, and heel. They've also taught me how to finish, do handshakes, high fives, jump over ropes, and also to pray.

They really think the world of me because they are always saying "good Miley" or "smart girl". I don' t know what they are saying but the look in their eyes and on their face makes me feel good. I try to please them and in return they give me the best chest scratches and belly rubs that I've ever had. Sigh!!! I'm gonna miss them. I've been adopted, and I'm soo excited! I can't wait to get my own yard! I gotta go now, I'm gonna try to trick Javier into giving me a belly rub (he falls for it every time).

Gater with Robert Lee and Obrien Brown

ADOPTED

Hello, my name is Obrien. I would like to take a little time to tell you about Gater. Gater has been in training for a bout three weeks and he is doing good on leash training, sit, stay, down, and come. He is a good boy and I enjoy working with him. The thing I love about him is he loves people and other dogs. He will play all day as long as you want him to but will stop when told to. Please come to see for yourself what Gater can do.

The Dog Days of Training!

Gater proves he will sit when told and stay until you ask him to come. Even if it's boring.

King wont take the toy away unless you give it to him.

Even dogs can be taught to pray. Just ask Miley.

All this just for  a good belly rub...

and a chance to lay in the shade. I know you are probably wondering where Cheyenne is?
She's was way too cool to be caught by my camera. Or maybe a little camera shy.
(Plus, every photo of her had her eyes closed. I will try harder next time.)

Isn't King a beautiful dog?

Tater likes to give paw!

Belladonna had to get a bath!

Taking time for rest and play!

Samuel likes that Sammy doesn't mind a good brushing!

While Delilah was getting a good petting the other three were taking a sniff break.

Shaking paws seems to be a favorite with the dogs.

It is hard for the guys to give up their friends.

Patches can shake hands and give high five!

After the training there is time to play and rest.

This is Ralph's little hat! He had a little nick on his ear and they all were concerned
and put this little collar on to keep him comfortable. I don't think anything could bother this little fella!

Madison can take a treat from her trainers mouth
without even a nip!

This is Lucy on graduation day! The other inmates
made caps and gowns for all the dogs.

This is Ziggy waiting with her trainer for graduation!

Lucy and her trainers show just how high they are willing to jump!

Dog Prayer

O' Great Dog Spirit
Whose bark I hear in the winds:
and whose breath give life to all the world, hear me! I am small and weak, I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the human life.
Make my paw respect the things human have made and my ears sharp to hear human voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things that human have taught me. Let me learn the lesson that human have hidden in every part of a human body. I seek strength, not to be greater than dogs, but to fight my greatest enemy-myself. Make me always ready to come to you with a clean paw and  straight eyes. So when dogs life fade, as the fading sunset my spirit  may come to you without shame.
