Saffron is a very sweet and loving cat, she hasn't had the easiest life and was originally from an animal control facility. Even with all she's been through she is still trusting of the people around her and loves to play. She was playing and running around recently when she jumped up onto a ledge but missed and fell backwards. She was immediately taken to the emergency vet in Boone where they diagnosed her with IVDD (intervertebral disc disease), this is when one or more of the disks between the bones of the back either bulges or bursts into the area surrounding the spinal cord. Because of this injury Saffron has lost mobility in her back legs, mainly her back right. Pets with IVDD whose injury progresses no further than spinal pain and mild weakness may be treated medically, with good prognosis for full return of function. Those with loss of movement still have a fair to good chance of recovering full function, provided medical or surgical treatment is timely and appropriate. At the time of her appointment the vet thought the best course of action was to treat medically and believes she has a good chance of regaining her mobility. The most important part of Saffron's care is strict kennel rest, which could make the difference between a full recovery and permanent damage. She needs to be in a kennel no larger than necessary for her to stand up, turn around and have space for a shallow litter box, food and water. Strict kennel rest should be enforced for the next 4-6 weeks. She does have a follow up vet appointment on Tuesday to see how she is progressing. We are looking for someone that is interested in fostering or adopting her that can properly give her medications, ensure that she is getting kennel rest and bring her to vet appointments if needed. She is such a wonderful cat and truly deserves the best life has to offer her. While she is getting kennel rest and medications here at the shelter we think it would lift her spirits and be very beneficial for her to be in a calm home environment to recover from this unfortunate accident. ❤ ❤
